Australian Software Chosen by U.S. Military for Unmanned Aircraft

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

U.S. Reaps Benefits of Australian Expertise

Software developed by award-winning Australian IT company Absolute Data Group (ADG) has continued to impress international organisations, with the U.S. Air Force (USAF) being the latest to benefit from its cutting-edge solutions.

U.S. defence contractor, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., has selected ADG’s content delivery solution to provide interactive electronic technical manuals for the Air Force’s new unmanned aerial system (UAS), the MQ-9 Reaper.

The S1000D software, known as R4i CSDB, means that the USAF can now supplement its traditional high-quality printed manuals with more efficient, interactive, electronic manuals to allow personnel to maintain and repair the new UAS easily.

“R4i essentially creates ‘smart’ maintenance and operational applications that can link manuals, training modules, video and audio to stores systems for parts availability and information,” said Tammy Halter, CEO, ADG.

“This is important because field personnel need easy access to an enormous amount of technical information.  The R4i application allows them to access what they need on the run and in several formats.”

ADG is becoming a household name amongst defence, automotive and IT leaders, not just in Australia, but throughout the world, said Tammy.

“It’s exciting to see ADG technology being used all around the world by some of the biggest organisations and for very important projects,” she said.

“Large organisations and defence departments internationally are choosing R4i because it’s more cutting-edge, cost-effective, quicker to implement  and higher on features compared to other products available.  Customers also trust in ADG’s heritage of working with SGML, XML, Defence, Aerospace and Airline requirements for the last 15 years.”

R4i is currently in use by Australian Aerospace, Australian Defence Industries, Australian Submarine Corporation, the Australian Army, Boeing and Virgin Blue Airlines.

NOTES

About the MQ-9 Reaper

Predator B/MQ-9 Reaper is an unmanned aerial system  developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. and is currently operational with the U.S. Air Force, NASA and U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Customs and Border Protection and has been acquired by the U.S. Navy and the Royal Air Force.

The remotely operated aircraft is the Air Force’s first purpose-designed hunter-killer UAS designed for long-endurance high-altitude armed reconnaissance and surveillance.

The MQ-9 Reaper design utilizes a 900 shaft-horsepower turboprop engine that allows the aircraft to carry 10 times more ordnance and cruise at twice the speed of its predecessor, the MQ-1 Predator.

The aircraft can carry a variety of weapons, such as air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles and bombs.
